Two films I have been waiting for all year are finally here. THREE BILLBOARDS
OUTSIDE EBBING MISSOURI and LADY BIRD are beginning in back-to- back weeks
as KFS selections, and I am one excited guy. THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING
MISSOURI is only the third film from Tony-winning playwright Martin McDonagh
and this could be his best yet.
McDonagh has created an unforgettable role for his star, Frances McDormand. Ms.
McDormand plays Mildred Hayes, a mother who wants justice for her daughter’s
murder and shames the local sheriff’s department into action by bringing to light
their lack of effort on three billboards. Mildred is a wounded mother who swears
like a sailor and has anger management issues. She is surrounded with a sensational
supporting cast including Woody Harrelson, Peter Dinklage, Lucas Hedges, John
Hawkes and the underrated Sam Rockwell.
The role of Mildred Hayes in this film will rival Ms. McDormand’s great Academy
Award winning performance as Marge Gunderson in 1997’s FARGO. The Academy
Award nominations come out in January and you should expect to hear them call her
name in the Best Actress category.
I believe that if playwrights like Ibsen, Strindberg and Shaw were alive today, they
would be working in multiple mediums like modern playwrights/film directors Sam
Shepherd, David Mamet or Martin McDonagh, who is best known for 8 plays,
produced on stages around the world. As a master playwright, McDonagh loves
dialogue and dark humor and will certainly move you emotionally before you can
leave the theater. You’ll be thinking about this film long after seeing it. Don’t miss it.
