LADY BIRD, one of the most anticipated films of the year, is finally here. It’s a love
letter to daughters, their mothers and the towns they can’t wait to get out of. In
telling this semi-autobiographical story, actor, writer and first time director, Greta
Gerwig has made a film that has all critics using superlatives to describe. Ms. Gerwig
has left the acting to Saoirse Ronan as a teenager butting heads with her mother, the
wonderful Laurie Metcalf.
Both have been heralded for their performances, and Ms. Gerwig strikes exactly the
right chord in portraying the fraught mother/daughter relationship. With a great
supporting cast including Tracy Letts, Lucas Hedges, Timothee Chalamet and the
legendary Lois Smith, this smart film is considered one of the best of 2017.
For the Academy Award watchers, don’t be surprised to see nominations for Ms.
Ronan, Ms. Metcalf and Best Film. I had the great fortune of seeing Laurie Metcalf on
stage in her Tony Award winning role of Nora in A DOLL’S HOUSE, PART 2 this
summer, and it was the best performance of any I have seen all year. More known
for her stage work, I believe Ms. Metcalf is one of our greatest working actresses
Come see why this film is getting all the critic’s top scores.
